Abstract

In a low-density hydrogen plasma, the saturation behavior of the Hα line emission has been studied by Doppler-free polarization spectroscopy with a pulsed high-power tunable laser. Spectral profiles of the Doppler-free fine structure components of the Hα line were found to be largely distorted by the effect of reabsorption in the plasma. A simple calculation of the spectral profiles, while taking into account the effect of the plasma opacify in the saturation condition, is in good agreement with the experimental result.
