Abstract

The effect of a low concentration (50 p.p.b.) of six commonly used pesticides (DDT, endosulfan, lindane, methyl parathion, dimethoate and sevin) on the net photosynthesis and dark respiration activities of six abundant macrophytes ( Chaetomorpha linum (Müll.) Kütz., Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Link, Gracilaria verrucosa (Huds.) Papenf., Grateloupia doryphora (Mont.) Howe, Halophila ovalis (R.Br.) Hook.f. and Halodule uninervis (Forsk.) Aschers.) was investigated. The macrophytes exhibited differential responses in their activities to different pesticides. The halophytes Halophila ovalis and Halodule uninervis were found to be more tolerant than the macro-algae. Among the pesticides, DDT and lindane were more toxic than most others, while sevin exerted no significant effect.
