Abstract

This paper compares the effect of passive rf exposure on the specific absorption rate and absorbed power of an adult and a child passenger without phones inside an elevator when several other passengers are using their mobile phones simultaneously. The absorbed power and SAR were calculated using finite-difference time-domain. The mobile phones were modeled as half-wavelength dipole antenna placed at the distance of 16 mm from the head, with a transmitting power of 0.25 W. Our results show that child passenger without phone absorbs more power passively as compared to adult passenger. For the case when non-user passenger is surrounded by five passengers using mobile phones, power of 118 and 218 mW were absorbed by the adult and child models, respectively, implying that the passive rf exposure depends on the size of the passengers. Furthermore, the maximum values of the whole-body SARs due to passive exposure are obtained in this work are much smaller than the ICNIRP basic restriction.
