Abstract

The barrier properties of Fe(2)O(3)/polyurethane coatings containing 60-nm and 150-nm Fe(2)O(3) particles with different pigment volume concentrations (PVCs) were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and accelerated salt spray tests. The results indicate that the addition of 60-nm Fe(2)O(3) can significantly improve the barrier properties of a coating, while 150-nm Fe(2)O(3) has little effect. The 0.2% PVC 60-nm Fe(2)O(3) coating had significantly improved protection.
