Purpose Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is one of the primary pillars of Islam. Muslims abstain from all water, food, and medications from dawn till dusk for the duration of the month. The start of Ramadan depends on the lunar calendar, with the dates changing yearly. Fasting is considered obligatory for observant Muslims, including adolescents starting at puberty.
