Effect of orthodontic treatment combined with ornidazole on serum IL-6, CRP, and TNF-α levels in patients with periodontitis

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of orthodontic treatment combined with ornidazole on serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in patients with periodontitis. Methods A total of 90 patients with periodontitis were admitted to our hospital from February 2018 to February 2019 were enrolled. According to the computer random number table method, they were divided into two groups, 45 patients in each group. The control group received orthodontic treatment, and the experimental group received orthodontic treatment combined with ornidazole. The levels of IL-6, CRP, and TNF-α, and the curative effect were compared between the two groups. Results After treatment, the level of IL-6 in the experimental group was (2.25±0.23) pg/ml, the level of CRP was (1.44±0.22) mg/L, and the level of TNF-α was (32.39±2.12) pg/ml, respectively, which were lower than those in the control group [(5.65±1.18) pg/ml, (3.73±0.26) mg/L, (53.56±2.23) pg/ml], with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). After treatment, the gingival bleeding index of the experimental group was (1.73±0.10) points, and the depth of probing of the periodontal pocket was (2.46±0.22) mm, which were lower than those of the control group [(2.41±0.14) points and (3.28±0.31) mm], with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). After treatment, the SNA angle of the experimental group was (71.16±1.04)°, and the SNB angle was (70.28±0.35)°, which were smaller than those of the control group [(76.23±1.32)°, (73.45±0.54)°], with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). Conclusion Orthodontic treatment combined with ornidazole can effectively reduce the levels of IL-6, CRP, and TNF-α of patients with periodontitis, promote the improvement of periodontal status and improve the orthodontic effect.
