Abstract

Larvae of Hippelates pusio Loew were reared in media containing different proportions of C.S.M.A. (Chemical Specialties Manufacturers Association) medium and oven-dried sand. Mixtures with 25% of the C.S.M.A, medium produced more adults than those with larger percentages and mixtures with 1%, 5%, 10% and 15% were superior to others with 20%. Observations made in the field showed that Hippelates pusio and H. bishoppi Sabrosky bred in soil that contained as little as 2% and as much as 27% of organic matter. It was apparent that these species can mature in media containing very low amounts of organic material.
