Abstract

Elevated endometrial levels of MMPs seen with prolonged exposure to synthetic progestogens could contribute to breakthrough bleeding observed in some women using continuous cycle oral contraceptive (OC) regimens. We sought to describe the expression of MMPs in endometrial biopsies collected 1) prior to initiating OCs 2) while taking cyclic OCs, 3) while taking extended OCs and 4) while taking extended OCs with doxycycline (an inhibitor of MMPs).
