Abstract

During the administration of oral contraceptive agents platelet behaviour resembles that of patients with arterial disease, in that there is an increase of platelet sensitivity to adenosine diphosphate as determined by the electrophoretic technique. Between treatment cycles the platelets return to normal. A contraceptive preparation containing progestogen only has no effect on platelet electrophoretic behaviour. The increased platelet sensitivity to A.D.P. results from the appearance in the plasma of an abnormality in the lecithin of the lowdensity lipoproteins: under the influence of a labile plasma component this lecithin is converted to a substance that affects the platelets. This plasma system is similar to that in patients with arterial disease.
