Abstract

Noise properties of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) subject to optical feedback are investigated via calculations of the relative intensity noise (RIN) and turn-on delay jitter for the device. It is shown that, despite their high facet reflectivities, VCSELs have a similar sensitivity to conventional edge emitting laser diodes towards optical feedback.
