Abstract

Poly(3-n-pentylthiophene) and poly(3-n-hexylthiophene) have been synthesized using the potentiostatic technique. The polymers show a bimodal molecular weight distribution. The molecular weight of the polymers increases as the applied potential is increased up to about 1.7 V vs SCE and then levels off and decreases because of chain degradation. The presence of oligomeric additives, 2,2'-bithiophene and 2,2':5,5'-terthiophene, in the polymerization system significantly enhances the structure regularity of the chains. The molecular weight becomes lower as the amount of the additives is increased
