Abstract

A list of 53 primary schools in the Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria was obtained. Five schools were chosen from the list by numerical series. A total of 250 children were statistically chosen using (Fisher, R.A. & Yates, 1974) table of random sampling. Gomez standard Malnutrition Classification was used. A total of 99 pupils were in the first percentile, 23 in the second and 2 in the third percentile by age group. One hundred and seventy children whose haemoglobin level fell below 12g% were malnourished, Chi‐square (p < .05) value showed relationship between haemoglobin level and nutritional status of the children. Equally there was chi‐square association between serum albumin and nutritional status, about 90 children had the serum albumin below 3.5 g/dl. Disturbing information emerged among the malnourished children. A total of 89 repeated class, and 44 children had poor academic performance, 107 in borderline.
