Abstract

Barksdale, Alma Whiffen. (New York Bot. Garden, N.Y.C.) Effect of nutritional deficiency on growth and sexual reproduction of Achlya ambisexualis. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49(6): 633–638. Illus. 1962.—A defined medium favorable to growth and sexual reproduction in Achlya ambisexualis Raper is described. The minimal nonlimiting amounts required per mg nitrogen supplied were, for 6 elements, as follows: (in mg) C, 24; P, 0.31; S, 0.05; K, 0.19; Mg, 0.08; Ca, 0.08. The concentration of nitrogen non‐limiting to growth was ca. 24 mg per 100 ml whereas the concentration non‐limiting to oogonial production was 8 mg per 100 ml. Deficiency in the production of oogonia relative to deficiency in growth is least when glucose, phosphorus, or sulphur is limiting and greatest when magnesium, potassium, or calcium is limiting.
