Abstract

Many clinical studies have been published concerning the therapeutic effect of a raw apple diet on diarrhea and bacillary dysentery in children. The original purpose of this investigation was to study the bacterial flora at different levels of the intestine in monkeys which are natural hosts to bacillary dysentery. The flora on the normal diet was to be compared with that of an apple diet and subsequently the effect of an apple diet on experimental bacillary dysentery. The first two objects have been accomplished but not the latter, due to our failure to produce experimental dysentery in these animals.
