Abstract

Periodontitis, the most common periodontal pathology, is a chronic disease orchestrated amongst the infectious organisms and humoral and cellular immune responses of the host.2 Initially only the bacteria like Treponema Denticola, PorphyromonasGingivalisand Tannerella Forsythia were linked with the disease and hence the term periodontal microbiology was recoined as periodontal bacteriology. The hunt for the etiology however did not end here as many patients still did not fall into this domain of causative factors. This tickled the researchers to put on their thinking caps when they pondered over viruses being the unexplained etiology. Multiplex PCR is the simultaneous detection of multiple targets in a single reaction well, with a different pair of primers for each targets. This technique is indispensable with two or more probes that can be distinguished from each other and recognized simultaneously.
