Abstract
Uneven liquid distribution (maldistribution) is a recurrent problem in the design and operation of packed towers, regardless of the type of packing. Using a simple but rigorous analysis it can be shown that the effect of liquid maldistribution on holdup is highly nonlinear and has cascading effects on liquid residence times and mass transfer rates. A statistical liquid film thickness description is used to characterize liquid distribution on corrugated structural packing. The distribution has a single adjustable parameter, the volume average variance of the distribution.
