Abstract

The experiment was conducted during the year 2015–16 at Rohru in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh (2419 m amsl) to compare the effects of various sources of nitrogen on growth, production, fruit quality of Royal Delicious apples and to find out alternate source of nitrogen for the substitution for CAN (calcium ammonium nitrate), which was earlier recommended for Himachal Pradesh. Soil application of five sources of nitrogen viz. urea, calcium nitrate, 19: 19: 19 + urea, 12: 32: 16 + urea and calcium ammonium nitrate at the three levels (840, 700 and 560 g N/tree) were tried and compared to get best nitrogen source and level of application. Calcium ammonium nitrate at 700 g level was observed as the best treatment for growth, fruit set and yield which was closely followed by calcium nitrate and urea at 700 g N/tree. Fruit quality in terms of fruit size, weight, sugars and total soluble solids improved with CAN and calcium nitrate at 700 g N/tree level.
