Abstract

Influence of Nb addition on the internal oxidation of a novel powder metallurgy superalloy was studied. The results indicated that higher Nb concentration leads to deeper internal oxidation but narrower γ′ phase depletion region. Nb enhanced the partition of more Al into γ′ phase, which slows down the outward diffusion of Al and hence promotes the nucleation of Al2O3 in alloy matrix, giving rise to less impediment to the inward diffusion of O. Thus, Nb addition leads to deeper penetration of O into alloy matrix or deeper internal oxidation.
