Abstract

In order to avoid the slab quality problems in the process of continuous casting, mineralogical structure of flux film for medium carbon steel was studied systematically and the reasonable mineralogical structure of flux film was confirmed by combining with the lubrication and heat transfer characteristics of the mould flux. The results showed that layered structures of flux film were mostly crystallization phase, and the dominating phase was akermanite, with a small number of cuspidine and wollastonite. The akermanites were distributed on the shell side, wollastonites were spread in the middle of the flux film, and cuspidines were scattered in the glassy layer which was adjacent to the mould side. According to the analysis, the crystallization rate of flux film should be increased and the contents of wollastonite and cuspidine should be reduced to avoid longitudinal cracks and sticking breakout in continuous casting.
