Abstract

The bainitic steel austempered below MS (martensite start temperature) with good strength and toughness has a great potential in the field of wear resistance. In this paper, the impact abrasive wear resistance of bainitic steel austempered below MS temperature was studied and compared with those of bainitic steel austempered above MS temperature. The results show that the wear resistance of bainitic steel austempered below MS is better than that of bainitic steel austempered above MS. The wear mechanism of bainitic steel austempered below MS is dominated by fatigue wear. This is attributed to the refinement of bainitic ferrite laths and martensite-retained austenite blocks by austempering processes below MS. The bainite steel austempered below MS with higher initial hardness can effectively resist the impact load and the damage of abrasive particles to the wear surface, thereby reducing the wear weight loss.
