Abstract

A study was conducted to experimentally investigate fresh and hardened properties of concrete produced by using a methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer as a diluent to improve the workability of unsaturated polyester (UP) resin-based polymer concrete. The results showed that as the MMA content increased, the workability and working life were largely improved, while the setting shrinkage was rather reduced. In addition, an increase in MMA content reduced the elastic modulus and compressive strength, but the reductions of these properties were much smaller than the one produced using a styrene monomer (SM). In conclusion, the use of MMA as the diluent to highly viscous UP resin was more beneficial than the use of SM to ensure the various properties of polymer concrete.
