Abstract

Abstract In an experiment by Palmer–Jones et al. (1957) to test the effect of “Metasystox“ on bees when applied to a crop of chou moellier (Brassica oleracea L.) in full bloom, opportunity was taken to assess the effects on the cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae (Brevicoryne brassicae (L.)) and its predator-parasite complex, and to make what preliminary observations were possible on the effect of this material on humans working in the crop. Counts taken showed that complete control of aphids took place, and that this condition was maintained until near harvest, a period of approximately 50 days. Little detrimental effect on parasites or predators was recorded. Humans suffered no drastic symptoms in the face of limited deliberate exposure.
