Abstract

The effects of four metal oxides (SiO 2, Al 2O 3, CaO and Fe 2O 3) and quartz beads on the secondary reactions of volatiles from coal pyrolysis have been investigated by using a two-stage reactor. A detailed materials balance for the secondary reactions was established. The abilities of oxides to crack aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were found to be in the order Fe 2 O 3 > Al 2 O 3 > CaO > SiO 2 > quartz beads. Fe 2O 3 decomposed most of the hydrocarbons at 900 °C, producing only a small amount of CH 4.
