Abstract

Evolution of matrix cracking and its influence on constant amplitude (CA) cyclic loading for multi-directional (MD) carbon fiber composite (CFC) is explored in this study. The tensile test of ±45 MD IMA / M21 prepreg CFC MD laminates was carried out to determine the stress level. Constant amplitude fatigue data of ±45 MD laminate for R = 0.1 was generated experimentally. The matrix crack density and stiffness degradation were measured and correlated with number of fatigue cycles. The matrix crack density was increasing rapidly at the beginning of fatigue life along with rapid stiffness degradation, Even though the final failure was either due to fiber breaking or delamination.
