Abstract

RATIONALE: We have previously shown that intrauterine environmental exposures (e.g., microbial) can influence eosinophil-basophil (Eo/B) lineage commitment in infants at risk for atopy. However, it is unknown how maternal smoking affects Eo/B lineage commitment in neonates at risk for allergy. Since cigarette smoke may modulate eosinophilopoiesis, we investigated the effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on Eo/B lineage priming.
