Abstract

The alloying of ca rbon s tee ls by manganese o r nickel i nc reases thei r tendency to c r ack in hydriding m e d ia [1-4]. The reasons for such a de le te r ious effect f rom manganese and nickel have not been es tabl ished. It is cons idered [5] that manganese sulf ides a re respons ib le for the d e c r e a s e in the r e s i s t a n c e of s tee l s to c r a c k ing. However , this may not be the sole unfavorable fac tor , since af ter e l ec t ro s l ag refining s teel containing 2.5% manganese also has a low r e s i s t a n c e to c racking [6].
