Abstract

The heat capacity of HoAl2 reveals an unexplained anomaly at 20 K. It appears that this anomaly originates from a change in the easy direction of magnetization brought about by the combined effect of crystalline electric and exchange fields. Calculations have been performed using the equivalent operator method. The exchange field acting on Ho3+ is determined in a self-consistent manner. Changes in the easy direction of magnetization are found for a range of reasonable crystal field parameters. The calculated Ho3+ magnetic moment is in agreement with experiment.
