Abstract

To improve combustion efficiency, a low-frequency alternating-current electric field was applied to the laminar and turbulent combustion of premixed CH4/air flame. Experiments were carried out under the condition of 0.3 MPa, excess air ratios of 1.2 ∼ 1.6, applied voltage of 1 kV ∼ 5 kV, and the frequency of 40 Hz ∼ 100 Hz in a constant volume combustion bomb. Results showed that the electric field could promote both laminar and turbulent combustion, the flame propagation velocity was increased by an increase in the electric field strength. However, as the frequency of the electric field increases, the promoting effect of combustion gradually weakens. This phenomenon was more significant for laminar combustion, and the flame propagation speed in the turbulent field significantly increased, such that the effect of adding an electric field was relatively insignificant. Particularly, for the combustion pressure, the electric field strength had a significant impact on the pressure of the turbulent flame only when it reached a certain level.
