Abstract

This paper is aimed to determine the efficacy of two liquid nano-materials named Zycosoil and Zycotherm in terms of water susceptibility to compare the results with similar results of mixtures modified with Portland cement and hydrated lime. Furthermore, their effects on physical and rheological properties of asphalt binder were evaluated. Hence, different percentages of the additives were used. Also, related test methods including; bitumen conventional tests, Hamburg Wheel Tracking, Marshall Immersion and Indirect Tensile Strength tests were implemented. The results demonstrated that 0.5% of Zycotherm followed by 0.5% of Zycosoil have the most significant effect on diminishing moisture damage potential where both of these liquid additives function more efficient compared to full replacement of filler materials with Portland cement and hydrated lime. Rheological evaluation of the organosilane modified binders were slightly varied compared to the base binder. Although Penetration Index indicates the lower temperature susceptibility of modified binders, Penetration Viscosity Number does not reveal meaningful results. Hence, effect of the liquid additives on temperature susceptibility of bitumen is still open for discussion.
