Abstract

Lindane applied from vaporizers or as a dust in the litter has been shown by Moore (1952) and others to be effective in controlling three species of chicken lice, the body louse, the shaft louse and the fluff louse. Smith (1952) has suggested using lindane as a spray because of the added advantage of fly control as well as louse control. With fairly widespread use of lindane as an insecticide, some reports from users have indicated that the use of lindane results in lowered egg production. The experiment herein reported was designed to test the effect of lindane on egg production. It was conducted during the hot summer months when lindane should be most volatile, and therefore be most likely to exert a detrimental effect on egg production if the compound is harmful.MATERIALS AND METHODSEighty-five Oklahoma Station Strain New Hampshire pullets which had finished their 500-day test period .
