Abstract

Background and Objectives: The study of the demography of aging in developing countries is a relatively new endeavor. This study aims to determine the effect of lifestyle on the quality of life and general health of the elderly in Ahvaz, Iran. Methods: This descriptive survey study was conducted on 1000 older adults aged > 60 years in Ahvaz city in 2020. Data collection tools were a demographic form, the lifestyle questionnaire, the older people’s quality of life questionnaire, and the general health questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, frequency, and percentage) and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation test or Spearman correlation test). The significance level was set at 0.05. To test the conceptual model of the study, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used in AMOS software. Results: All t coefficients for the factorial structure of the study model were greater than 1.96 and, thus, all study hypotheses were confirmed. The results showed that the lifestyle of the elderly had a significant effect on their general health. Conclusion: It is necessary to increase the knowledge of healthy lifestyle in the elderly living in Ahvaz city by using educational programs such as stress management training, healthy nutrition education, and recreational and sports programs.
