Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of lidocaine glue on midstream urine culture and double-J stent bacterial culture after double-J stent indwelling. Methods Fifty-six patients with double-J stent placement in Yushan County people's Hospital of Jiangxi Province from May 2013 to December 2018 were randomly assigned into either a control group or a treatment group, with 28 cases in each group. In the control group, sterile saline solution was applied to the surface of the double-J stent, while the surface of double-J stent was evenly coated with lidocaine glue in the treatment group. Urinalysis and midstream urine culture were routinely tested before the operation. At around postoperative 4 weeks, urinalysis, midstream urine culture, and double-J stent bacterial culture immediately after stent removal were performed. The chi-square test was used to compare the positive rate of culture results between the two groups, and t-test was used to compare the difference of urine white blood cell count between the two groups. Results There was no significant difference in preoperative urinalysis or midstream urine culture between the two groups [(1537±477)/μl vs (1410±355)/μl, t=0.780, P=0.439; 10.7% vs 14.3%, χ2=0.163, P=0.686]. The positive rates of postoperative double-J stent culture and midstream urine culture in the control group were significantly higher than those in the treatment group (25.0% vs 3.6%, χ2=5.25, P=0.022; 28.0% vs 7.1%, χ2=4.383, P=0.036). There was no significant difference in postoperative urinalysis between the two groups (t=0.089, P=0.929). Conclusion Lidocaine glue reduces the positive rates of postoperative midstream urine culture and double-J stent bacterial culture and may prevent urinary tract infection effectively.
