Abstract

Abstract A concrete core under compression is restrained at the ends by the steel platens of the testing machine. The confining stresses so produced limit the lateral expansion of the core and create a state of triaxial stress in the concrete; thus, the measured compressive strength of the core is increased. The magnitude of the effect is dependent on the length/diameter ratio of the core. A formula for the strength correction factor is derived by a semirational approach. The proposed formula is then checked against the existing test data.
