Abstract

The activity of platinized platinum catalysts modified by lead adatoms was studied. The hydrogenation of maleic acid in an acidic solution was used as test-reaction. The level of toxicity of lead was high and depended on the concentration of the organic compounds. Such a result cannot be explained by geometrical or by electronic effects of adsorbed lead. An explanation is proposed, based on the mobility of lead adatoms at the platinum surface.
