Abstract

The growing interest in sustainability has made the use of recycled aggregates a priority, generating a constant search for appropriate alternatives for the disposal of construction waste. Thus, in this paper was verified the effect of mortars contaminated with lead. For this, mortars were produced with partial replacement (25%) of the natural aggregate by lightweight aggregate (LWA) or recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). The mortars were prepared with the aggregates (LWA and RCA) in the dry and saturated conditions. Also, the mortars were contaminated with lead in 100 and 300 ppm. It was verified that mortars prepared with LWA presented lower water absorption and open porosity than mortars prepared with RCA, even the LWA was visibly more porous than the RCA. The pre-wetting the aggregates does not influence the properties of mortars significantly. Finally, it was verified that the RCA can be used in civil construction mortar, increasing its potential of use.
