Abstract
AbstractThe effect of lattice distortion on electron—impurity scattering is estimated using the distorted‐wave Born approximation for phase shifts. For weak impurity scattering the phase shift for the scattering complex is the sum of the phase shifts from the point impurity and the lattice strain field. Model calculations show that there may be important corrections to this picture when the magnitudes of the impurity phase shifts are about π/10 or larger. These corrections arise from backscattering of electrons by the distortion field surrounding the impurity. It is concluded that one may incur appreciable error in calculating pseudopotentials or impurity phase shifts in the presence of lattice distortion if one does not include the lattice backscattering effect discussed in this paper.
