Abstract
In this study, the influence of laser surface texturing (LST) depth and pattern on the bond strength and corrosion performance of phosphate conversion (PC) coating deposited on magnesium alloy has been investigated. The results reveal that high surface roughness and high specific area induced by LST pretreatment can promote the deposition of PC coating. Groove texture with proper depth can greatly reduce the shedding rate and improve the bond strength of PC coating, comparing to that of the as-received coating. Increasing the ratio of texture area with adopting mesh texture can further improve the bond strength of the coating. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate the coatings with shallow groove and mesh texture pretreatment endow a prominent improvement in corrosion resistance for the AZ31 alloy and provide long-term protection for 100 h in Hanks’ solution.
