Abstract

The experimental work to investigate the effect of combustion, performance and emission in a Direct Injection Compression Ignition (DICI) engine with Spherical bowl chamber (SB) and Toroidal bowl chamber (TB) runs with diesel and Karvel methyl ester (KRME) in a 4.4 kW air cooled engine coupled with alternator. The experiments were conducted at equal interval load to maximum rated load to maintain constant speed of 1500rpm. The effect of the piston bowl geometry characteristics on performance and emissions characteristics have been analysed. This analysis indicates brake thermal efficiency for KRME is higher at part load conditions for both bowl chambers. The specific fuel consumption for both bowl chamber diesel fuel is lower than KRME. Unburned hydrocarbon and nitrogen of oxides reduced significantly for spherical bowl chamber greatly lesser than toroidal bowl chamber for diesel and KRME. The carbon monoxide is higher for toroidal bowl chamber with diesel and KRME at part load.
