Abstract

New coordination compounds of copper(II) and cobalt(II) with 3-(chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride (HL1)Cl and 2-(chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride (HL2)Cl of the following composition: (HL1)2[CuCl4] (1), (HL1)2[CoCl4] (2), (HL2)2[CuCl4] (3) and (HL2)2[CoCl4] (4) have been synthesized. The compounds have been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, simultaneous TG&DSC analysis, IR spectroscopy, and temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements. The proposed structure for 1 consists of [CuCl4]2– anions with a square-planar structure, which formed 1D-chain due to the coordination polyhedron is completed with the chlorine atoms of neighboring units. The XRD-studied compounds 2-4 are ionic-type complexes with distorted tetrahedral [MCl4]2– units; the structures show the formation of a halogen bond between Cl of the anion and Cl of adjacent cations. The melting temperatures, as well as the melting enthalpy and thermal stability intervals of ionic liquids were found.
