Abstract

The radiation chemistry of adenine in aqueous solution was studied both in the presence and in the absence of oxygen. Solutions of adenine in tripie- distilled water were irradiated at room temperature in the presence of oxygen with 40-Kv x rays and under vacuum with Co/sup 60/ y rays. Total doses in the range of 300,000 r were used. The resulting solutions were subjected to ion exchange chromatography. Typical elution diagrams are presented. The products were subjected to descending paper chromatography in various solvents. Data are tabulated on the degradation products identified. (C.H.)
