Abstract

Assessments of physical and intellectual development were obtained from children in iodine excess and iodine normal villages. These were compared with assessment of intellectual development from a city reference sample. Goitre incidence, thyroid gland volume and urinary/creatinine ratio were higher in the high iodine village. Children from the high-iodine village had a lower mean serum triiodothyronine and higher free thyroxine and serum thyroid-stimulating hormone concentration than the children from the central village. However, all children from both villages were euthyroid. Growth and intellectual performance were similar for children from both villages. A significant rural suppression effect on IQ was found.
