Abstract

Experimental investigation leading to the development of new stilling basin design for non circular pipe outlet using inverted T-shape splitter block is reported in this paper. Inverted T-Shape splitter blocks of different dimensions have been tested along with other appurtenances for a rectangular shaped pipe outlet of size 10.8cm x 6.3cm, for two Froude numbers, namely Fr = 2.85 and 3.85. Performance index (PI) has been used to evaluate the performance of stilling basin models tested using same sand base material and test run time. Performance of newly developed stilling basin model has been compared with USBR VI stilling basin and Verma and Goel stilling basin and others model. It is found that inverted T shaped splitter blocks affect the performance of models significantly and it is reported that the performance of newly developed model improved by five to six times as compared to Verma and Goel model by using inverted T- shaped splitter block instead of wedge shaped block as used in Verma and Goel model.
