Abstract

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are widely used in many applications due to their simple structure, robustness, and low cost. It is extensively used in industrial, domestic, aerospace, and military applications. These motors often provide improved stability of operation, linearity, speed control, and higher efficiency. A permanent magnet synchronous motor is designed and the effect of Inter Turn Short Circuit (ITSC) fault on performance characteristics is carried out for different severity levels by using Finite Element Method (FEM). Electrical faults lead to the critical failure of the electrical motors. Short circuit faults come under Electrical Faults. The finite element method provides a finite and inexpensive technique for analyzing electric motors. This method takes into account all the complex geometry, nonlinear characteristics of the motor, end effects, and axial fringing effects. Fault detection and analysis in PMSM using this method can assure the reliability of detection as well as the sensitivity of fault in a PMSM.
