Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of intense pulsed light (IPL) on basic fibroblastic growth factor (bFGF) expression in rat skin and to elucidate the biological mechanisms of photorejuvenation. Methods The three regions were selected and treated with IPL in 15 SD rats.Treatment parameters were the same:34 J/cm2 of the fluence, triple pulses (4 ms,5 ms,and 6 ms duration),20 ms and 25 ms of pulse delays. At days 1,3,5,7,15,and 30 after treatment, skin specimens were removed at treated areas and non-treated areas, respectively. The expression of bFGF was investigated by means of immunohistochemistry. Results At treated regions, positive stains were not observed in skin cells at day 1.Weaker stains in skin cells were observed at day 3.With time, stains got gradually stronger and reached highest at day 15 and maintained this situation to day 30.At non-treated areas, cells stains were negative. Conclusion IPL technology can enhance the expression of skin bFGF,suggesting that bFGF play a role in remodeling of skin in photorejuvenation.
