Abstract

The initial specific growth rate of Atropa belladonna hairy roots in shake flasks was found to vary with the number of inoculum root tips. Increasing the number of tips from 3 to 9 reduced growth rates in 50 and 100 ml of medium by up to 40%. These results are interpreted by considering the influence of factors such as medium conditioning and oxygen mass transfer on root growth.
