Abstract

Induction motor is one type of electric machine that is most often used. The use of induction motors starts from the needs of resident customers to large industries. However, the existence of an induction motor in the electric power system can interfere the power quality, especially large capacity induction motors. The cause of the disturbance is the starting current of the induction motor. Synchronous generator as power supply is also affected by the starting process. When the starting condition, the induction motor requires a lot of power to start its initial rotation. The moment of inertia in the induction motor increases the load starting torque. In addition, synchronous generators also have to produce greater power to meet the needs of starting an induction motor. This paper aims to analyze the effect of starting induction motor on the power quality of synchronous generator. In the test method using induction motor with capacity of 100 kW, 300 kW, 700 kW, and 1 MW. Each induction motor takes parameter data such as starting current, motor torque, motor speed, motor voltage, active power and reactive power consumption. Likewise with the disturbed quality of synchronous generator power, then the parameters that experience disturbances are taken such as current, voltage, power factor, active power and reactive power generated by synchronous generators. Furthermore, all the results of these experiments are compared between induction motors with different power capacities to the power quality of synchronous generators.
