Abstract

Measurement of tissue oxygen tension of heart muscle by polarography has been extensively performed by many investigators. It has been used to measure normal regional differences in the ventricular walls 6,7,15,17 the effects of various drugs 15,17, gases 8, and physiologic interventions 17. These studies have shown a higher subepicardial tissue oxygen tension (Epi Po2) then subendocardial tissue oxygen tension (Endo Po2) in the left ventricular free wall 6,7. Tissue oxygen tension is controlled by the balance between the oxygen supply and the tissue oxygen demand. The interaction of these two factors in the control of Epi Po2 and Endo Po2 with changes in heart rate are unknown and the rationale for the present study.
