Abstract

(Anesth Analg. 2021;132:1338–1343) Sleep deprivation (SD) can have adverse effects on cognitive function and decision-making, and lead to motor vehicle accidents and devastating health and environmental disasters. Sleep occurs in 4 stages in cycles lasting 90 to 120 minutes. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours per night. There are a number of sleep disturbances and disorders, including insomnias, excessive somnolence (DOES), and parasomnias. SD is categorized into long-term SD (>45 h), short-term SD (≤45 h), and partial SD (<7 h/24 h).
