Abstract

Effect of light illumination on the CdS–LiNbO3 separated medium convolver has been investigated. Semiconductive and semi-insulating CdS are used as typical materials to reveal the difference between physical processes of the convolution resulting from a nonlinear current near the surface and from the nonlinear capacitance of the surface depletion layer. In the case of semiconductive CdS with a surface depletion layer, the illumination effect on the convolution can be analyzed on the basis of a simple varactor model. On the other hand, the photoenhancement of the convolution for semi-insulating CdS is remarkable and can be well explained in terms of a surface nonlinear current induced through the acoustoelectric interaction.
