Abstract

1. Hypophysectomy in the cockerel depresses liver NADP-linked malic enzyme. Thyroxine (20 μg/kg of body wt.) increases malic enzyme activity both in intact and hypophysectomized birds. Growth hormone (1 mg/kg of body wt.) restored malic enzyme activity in hypophysectomized birds to control values but failed to increase enzyme activity in control birds. 2. Hypophysectomy caused a 73 per cent increase in liver glycerokinase activity. Thyroxine replacement therapy decreased glycerokinase activity to that of saline injected control birds. Growth hormone therapy did not depress glycerokinase activity nor did it enhance or prevent the thyroxine effect.
